I agree, 2 new featurettes and no commentaries is pretty disappointing. DTS sound will be nice though. Getting the HD DVD version anyway, it will have the same content afaik, will be interesting to see if they pull anything special for that one. A proper IME (In Movie Experience, stuff like picture-in-picture video commentaries) would be cool, but doubtful at the moment.

Very dissapointing. And I'm unclear where the 'never before seen footage' fits in as it doesn't appear there are any additional scenes on the disk, unless the film has been re-cut which seems unlikely.

I'll third and fourth on the chorus of disappointment...I was really looking forward to seeing deleted scenes. I guess we are going to have to wait for the directors cut. I had assumed that it would be included either in the movie or on the bonus disk. I wonder why they are doing that?

I'll buy the DVD anyway but no pre-ordering until I find out exactly what is on the DVD, if I can find out Grin. Maybe that is what they are referring to on disk 1? I dunno.

I happen to think that what we have now IS the director's cut. I think it's perfect the way it is. Although I'd like to see deleted scenes I'm not sure the movie could be made better by putting them back in. It could become another movie, with the risk of loosing it's present spareness.

More doesn't necessarily mean better.

What I'd like the most to be included is a comentary by Lee.
I think I agree there. I have 'Sense and Sensibility' with Ang's comments and found that really enlightening. That was back in 1996, when he wasn't even very famous.

This is what I was puzzled by: the "never before seen footage." Could it be that deleted scenes are on Disk 1 but that it has not been specified yet?

I didn't think Lee would have a director's cut of the film (which I wouldn't want to see--it's perfect the way it is), but it sounded like we would see a deleted scenes portion of the DVD.

A question: I've pre-ordered the collector's edition DVD -- is the high definition DVD going to be released separately from the "collector's edition?" If so, I would imagine it's the same as the collector's edition in terms of content?

I'm of two minds on the whole directors cut thing...if they would add deleted scenes directly into the movie or put them on a separate disk. On one hand, I would love to see what they left out. Let me re-phrase...I am dying to see what they left out. But, as John said, it would possibly change the sparseness of BBM and that is part of the beauty of BBM movie for me, makes it true to AP's story.

But, to put the extra scenes on a separate disk would seem kind of strange. I would watch a re-cut of BBM and then have to decide, I guess. See if I think that it added or detracts from the movie. Although, it sounds like I'm not going to get that chance, at least on this DVD.

I have seen re-cuts of other films that I have loved and to tell you the truth, I have not been disappointed. And I would so love to see more J/E moments.

I like the way they showed the scenes deleted from Maurice along with commentary about why they were left out. In a couple of cases, the director said he regretted cutting them. That is the way I d like to see those scenes handled. Well, guess I ll wait for someone else to view it when it comes out and pass a verdict.

All indications seem to point to one of the *least* inspired DVD double-dips in recent memory.  Darn.

The 2nd disc isn't even dual-layered--it's a DVD5 because there's so little on it.

The only clear additions are DTS, one new featurette, and (it seems) some brief outtakes/deleted scenes.  No commentary, no *REAL* documentary, and I'm willing to bet the new footage totals out to 2 or 3 minutes worth of deleted shots.

We'll see, of course.  But it sure looks like a wasted opportunity.

I would've used a different expletive, but I admire your restraint.
I wonder if there's someplace we could complain to?  I don't see
an address on Universal's info site page about it.

Maybe we should start a complaint thread to register our thoughts
about it.

P.S.:  I "did" find an email address where our thoughts could be addressed to Universal:

Since this thread is essentially to find out what we'd like to have or own or buy on a special edition dvd etc. -- I started a new thread called:

Dave has an important announcement about the forum, which he asks all members to read:

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=18085.msg602098#msg602098

We have set up a thread to discuss the situation. That discussion thread is linked from the post directly below the message from Dave. Follow the above link and you'll get to both.

Thanks

The administration has been working extremely hard to solve the slow down issue that has been plaguing the forum for some months now. It has been determined that to solve this we will have to change the host company of the forum. The new host server has now been contracted with by Dave as of today.

We are proceeding rapidly now and hope to have the conversion complete within a few weeks at the latest and hopefully much sooner. We will keep you (members) apprised. Please look for announcements in the Newsbox. Some changes will likely come up suddenly--that is the nature of computer conversions, so it is impossible to know before we test whether something will go flawlessly and take two hours, or uncover thorny issues that will take days. The testing process is being started. This will not affect the forum at this point.

So taking this into consideration, we don't want to give you timeframes that are unrealistic. As soon as we finish a stage, we'll proceed immediately to the next, and the exact changeover will likely come on very short notice to you (members). We will post this changeover time in the Newsbox as well as in the individual threads, and will give you as much lead time as we can manage. This will enable us to end the slowdown ASAP.

Thank you for your patience.
