the despair on Jack's face..."once in awhile?  every four fucking years?"

The question everyone wants to ask: "What do we do now?"

WHERE THE BLUEBIRDS SING & THERE'S A WHISKY SPRING

Quote
small torso,  beanpole length, high-arched nose, weather-eyed: Can there be much doubt AP was inspired by this photo? there is even a resemblance to Heath...just amazing, now that I see them both together...Even the personality comes across in the photo; there is a kind of a natural aloofness in youth-and a sort of battered stone wall in middle-age. This is just endlessly fascinating to me.

This is endlessly fascinating to me too.  The middle-aged photo, as you say, is very much Heath Ledger in the movie.  The broad nose, the care-worn frown and even the hair, which has become rather 'flattened' and lifeless, all look spooklily like Heath's portayal of Ennis.

Surely this points to the amount of research done by the likes of Ang Lee and Heath - indeed, I can recall an interview where Heath referred to Ang's attention to detail as being "microscopic".  Surely this photograph confirms this?

Wonder what other explanations there could be?  God, I love this movie!  It is so interesting on so many levels - and continues to be so.

And still I dream he'll come to me, That we will live the years together.

(Moved from Symbolism and Imagery)
No -- Short story too.  You're right -- dried beans much easier on the mules  than canned, or contrarywise, the mules could have carried more junk.

Maybe because of the altitude?  It  takes a lot longer for beans to cook, way up.  Just a thought.  One thing, though: AP is crazy-meticulous about detail, and researches obsessively.  Maybe she didn't here, though.

Just one more bean thought - dry beans should be soaked overnight before they're cooked, otherwise a painful gas situation will result.  Also, neither of the boys are cooks, so opening a can and heating the beans up might be just what they're capable of handling.

Hi fofol

This is the photo of the middle-aged ranch hand who bears more than a passing resemblance to the older Ennis in the movie.

I'm not saying he is the spitting image, but there is the "look"......  no?

His name is (or was) Richard Wheatcroft -- 24 years old in that 1st pic, and barely past 30 in the last pic!!

I think he is or was part Injun.  I can spot em a mile away.

Yes, he looks like he has some North American Indian blood.  A very handsome race, in my view.

I can´t get over these pictures (this one and the other showing a younger version of the same man).
The jacket, the broad nose, the hair cut, the clenched mouth, the facial expression, the look in his eyes as though he has been through a lot. Uncanny

This is the hair of Ennis at the Twists - the hair of one for whom hat wearing is de rigueur. I always used to think it a strange hair style but it makes sense now I see it on another.

I agree with you Monika et al, there is a striking resemblance to Ennis.

I think it has partly to do with the far-away look in his eyes.

His mind is somewhere else, not in the here-and-now.
