Technical Info We All Need

by Nick_F

This message is in response to the porn-spam which affected many of us a few days ago. (Editors Note: We are doing our best to make sure no more PM spam reaches our members.)

1.  Everyone, and I mean everyone, who has a pc or a mac attached to the Internet, should have up-to-date Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software installed on their machines and religiously kept up to date with the latest definition files (the things that know about all viruses).

It does not matter if you only use webmail, or do not use Outlook (Express)  or Internet Explorer, you are still at risk.  One of the most troublesome viruses of recent years Lovesan was able to get to your machine directly, without you needing to open up anything, just being connected to the internet was enough.

2.  You must keep your machine up to date with the latest security fixes, this is not just a problem for Windows PCs, Macs can be and are also affected.

3.  If you have any web accelerating software installed, whether you are aware of it or not, just looking at the "Don Johnson" PM may have made you vulnerable to the "malware" infection, as web accelerating software reads ahead into any links that appear in a web page.  If you were running anti-virus software or anti-spyware with the latest updates, it is unlikely you would have been infected.

4.  Just having a firewall (or firewall software) or anti-virus software or anti-spyware software installed is not sufficient - if you have a broadband connection you should have all 3 levels of protection.

5. Many people use the Ad-Aware-SE, software package.  Whilst this is a good product in itself, it only protects against spyware/malware and some trojans, but will not protect against true viruses and other exploits.  I re-iterate - you should have firewall, anti-virus & antispyware.

I recommend the following after years of experience.

If you can afford a commercial anti-virus software package then please choose from either McAfee, Panda, Trend or Sophos.  I have only ever had trouble with Norton or Norman.

I personally use AVG  (from grisoft.com) - it is totally free for personal use, is fast, easy to setup and maintain.  You may have trouble spotting the free edition on the supplier website but it is there.

As for Spyware, there are three free products that are very good, and I have them all installed.  Ad-Aware  by LavaSoft has a free personal edition. Spybot (Search & Destroy) is free and the best of the lot, particularly the immunize feature,  and the new Microsoft Windows Defender  which is free to download currently.  I update and run all three regularly.  (Note if you install Spybot (Search & Destroy) be careful not to install the "Tea Timer" function, it will slow everything wayyyy down.

For Firewall, if you have a Broadband Router then ensure it has a firewall and that it is switched on in addition to the other measures following.  If your PC has Windows XP - make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed and the Windows  Firewall turned on, this is a basic defense.  Then install also a personal firewall product.  Some are free, I believe Zonelabs is OK and Kerio Personal Firewall is highly rated, and take the software's recommendations when installing, even if it means it turns off the Windows XP  Firewall.

Pop-ups for the most part can be blocked by your browser Internet Explorer  6.0 now blocks them by default.  I belive Opera  and Firefox  are the same.  Additionally you could install the Google  or Yahoo toolbars which both enable pop-up blocking.

Just to set your mind at rest, with the latest versions of the internet browser (Microsoft's, Opera or Firefox) correctly configured and all the latest fixes installed, with AV and AntiSpyware installed and updated and a firewall there is only a minimal risk of getting anything nasty from normal access to any Internet Page.

I haven't had a virus infection of a spyware/malware infection for over 6 years and I do nothing more than the above, I know it sounds like techno-babble, but it really is straightforward (kinda)

Post of the Day from Symbolism and Imagery

magicmountain posted the following thoughts about
Journeys to Nowhere
in BBM:

"Once of the most striking images in BBM is the sight of a truck speeding across the landscape in one of the many doomed journeys that criss-cross this story.

The truck bearing Ennis to his fateful meeting with Jack in Signal.  The truck bearing Jack away from Ennis.   Ennis and Jack belting along the highway to start their ill-fated affair.  Ennis zooming down the road with his horse trailer home to his domestic chaos.  Ennis disappearing from view rounding the corner at speed with the same horse trailer to begin his lonely life without Jack.  Jack roaring down to Mexico for his bleak tryst in a dark alley.  Ennis driving back to his empty trailer.  Speeding on their way on journeys to nowhere.

In contrast we have the scenes in which Jack and Ennis ride in leisurely fashion side by side on their horses, a pair of deuces going nowhere in particular but it doesn’t matter.  They have already reached their destination because they are together."

You Know What Burning Man is, Don't You?

michaelflanagansf knows what Burning Man is.  Fortunately he sent me a weblink so I could find out, and now all of you will know, too.

From the Burning Man website:

"Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance."

Best I can figure out, this is an art-in-progress festival with very few limitations.  This year's Burning Man begins today, August 28 through September 4 in the Black Rock Desert, 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada, between the towns of Empire and Gerlach.

Given all that, michaelflanagansf has a question:  "Every year people do art projects with particular themes at the event.  I was wondering if anyone was going there to do a 'Brokeback' theme from the forum?"

Great idea!  If you are doing this, or know of someone who is, or you attend the event and you see any Brokeback themed art, please PM our Daily Sheet columnist michael(making the news)flanagansf

Lifestyles In the Forum

RobsGalPal posted this amazing photo in The Photo Place-How You See Life Through Your Camera:

A Country Perspective

Nick_F kicked off a discussion in A Country Perspective – Live in Your Land - "A lot of us live in rural areas, and work the land or make our livings from it.  The perspective of live, love, work and our views of the future are slightly different from the average.

A place for country folks to discuss the lifestyle."

David Dragon 3 posted the following:

"I was born in little ol' Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bernalillo county, and grew up in the foothills of the Sandia mountains.  My father's family came over with the conquistadors along with Coronado and have lived off the land for about 400 years.  We still maintain the land grant ranch in San Miguel County by walking fences and herding cattle.  Pops still lives on the ranch while I have taken to the city, but I still help at least once a week throwing hay, moving water and a number of other chores."

If you live in a rural setting or if you have a story about a rural setting, visit the thread (link above) and join the discussion.

Anne Hathaway Takes up Philanthropy in Central America

The website Contactmusic.com reports:

“Actress ANNE HATHAWAY is spending her summer vaccinating children in Central America against Hepatitis A after her boyfriend set up a health foundation. The Brokeback Mountain star and Italian boyfriend Raffaello Follieri have been traveling through Central America giving kids a medical boost in Honduras and Nicaragua, among other places."

PRESERVING BROKEBACK

Steve (aka calgaryactor) has been busy this past month not only finding Brokeback, but climbing Brokeback - or at least several of the peaks that are Alberta stand-ins for Annie Proulx's beloved mountain.

Along with DCF member nova20194, Steve recently ascended above the tree line to the very top of Moose Mountain, which towers over the "I ain't queer" meadow.  But the effort pales in comparison to climbs up Mount Yamnuska, Wind Tower, and most recently Ha Ling Peak, which is the mountain in the background of Ennis & Jack's famed fight hill.  Steve has promised us stories of his near face-to-face encounter (25 feet!) with a mountain goat & its kid, and photos of the 2,800 foot sheer vertical drop (that's more than two World Trade Centers) he encountered at the very top of Ha Ling.

After descending the mountain, Steve and his husband decided to drop in at nearby Campsite #2 and Jack & Ennis' Fight Hill.  There he encountered the hill fenced off with orange plastic mesh, and signs requesting that people stay off the site in order to help with restoring the vegetation to its natural state.  "I wasn't really surprised," says Steve.  "The site had been left in a bit of a mess, with remnants of wooden platforms left behind, and tire tracks still evident on the hill.  It was the right thing for parks officials to do, and the hill already looks a lot better.  There were tons of buterflies on the new foliage, and even evidence of recent bear activity!"

What did disappoint Steve though was to see that the fence had been cut in one spot, and there were footprints flattening the grass leading to the hill.  Steve and husband repaired the fence as best they could, but the damage had been done.

"I'd really hate to think that anyone who loves this movie might do that," says Steve.  It really flies in the face of the love that the characters have for the mountains.  And it also increases the possibility that these areas might be sealed off completely from us."

According to Steve, you can still experience the hill by walking around it - you just can't walk on it.  Once the vegetation again takes root, chances are good that the restrictions will be lifted - but not until then.

So it's probably as good a time as any, gentle readers of TDS, to remind any future travelers that the incredible opportunity to visit these amazing places comes with responsibility to respect and protect them.   Enjoy - but please tread lightly!

New Thread: How the Forum Get Togethers Have Affected Me

From BrokenOkie:

"Hello forum members!

As you all know, we have had many opportunities for forum members to get together in the months following the release of Brokeback Mountain, whether they were groups meeting for dinner and a viewing of the movie, or meetings that took place after the movie left the theaters, like the Wyoming Campout Weekend, or the BBM Backyard BBQ in Texas.

These meetings have affected members in different ways, and we have seen members expressing on the forum just how they feel they have changed, or wanting to discuss the effect of the get togethers on them, just like they want to discuss the way Brokeback Mountain  affected them.

This thread is open to all members who have attended any get together.  Whether it was a movie night, campout, BBQ, dinner, it is all welcome, as long as it is discussion on how the get togethers affected you.

Discussions need not stop with the Texas BBQ.  We look forward to hearing about the NYC meeting, the Slash Bash, and any other future meetings here.

So, step up, share your story, and continue to get closer to the forum members here!"

FanFiction Review

By Cynical21

The writer of this week's fanfic really needs no introduction, as she is well known both on the forum, on many other Brokeback sites, and recently, in the rarefied atmosphere that is reserved for published authors.  Connie Bailey, AKA forum member, lizardog, has created a marvelous new Alternative Reality story for our enjoyment.  In Just Another New Kid in Town, Bailey places teen-aged Jack and Ennis into a new environment.  In 1961, after the death of John Twist Sr, Jack and his mother are taken in by Uncle Harold in Signal.  The town's wealthiest citizen is Kenneth Del Mar, and his son Ennis is the local baseball hero.  When Jack reveals an unexpectedly strong throwing arm, Coach Aguirre covets him for the team, but Jack is uninterested.  He's too busy with his chores and an after school job to supplement his family's meager income.  When Aguirre sends a group of toughs to rough him up, Ennis steps in, and an unlikely new friendship is born.  A camping trip leads to a physical encounter that opens the door to all sorts of new, strange and scary feelings, but they find their growing affection for each other is stronger than their fears.  A confrontation with Del Mar Sr. over a runty pup leads to events that can change both of their lives forever.

Many of the characters found in the original story are present in this one, but in altered circumstances; however - as one insightful reviewer remarked - L. D. Newsome is a "rat bastard" in any universe, and that is a huge part of the challenge for a writer in an AU piece: to create new identities for the individuals but to retain the character so that he or she is instantly recognizable.  Connie has succeeded admirably.

The author might rightfully be termed the Grande Dame of Brokeback Mountain  fan fiction since her stories were among the very first to be posted in this genre; the date of that initial posting was 12/24/05.  While there is no way to be certain, it is probable that very few, if any, such stories would predate that one.  She also has the distinction of being the first BBM fanfic author to be approached by a publisher, who subsequently adapted two of her stories for publication, under the title Pasa Doble.

To access this most excellent new offering, go here.

Connie's LiveJournal link is here.

Brokeback Opera

rosewood has been posting opera ideas since July, and forum members are still talking about it in the Music Thread.  Here are a few of her thoughts about the singing characters:

"…the role of Alma in an opera would be monumental.  I could see three outstanding arias for this character.

1) When she first sees Jack and Ennis on the landing or down at the bottom of the stairs and she stumbles back inside. 'What Have I Seen?'
2)The kitchen scene at Thanksgiving when she confronts Ennis.  'Jack Nasty.'
3) When she says she'd have more babies if only Ennis would or could support them.  He responds,   'I'm happy to leave you alone.'  Wow.  That could be a devastating duet.

Aguirre, a definite basso profundo, would have a good moment in the beginning describing work on the mountain and what he expects.  Also, maybe, later, a short piece about the uncle's illness, sneering all the while.

As for Jack and Ennis duets, done in the right way and with the right singers--Now, hmmm, would Ennis be a baritone or tenor?  How about Jack.  Definitely a tenor.  Ennis is a baritone, I think."

To read more of rosewood's ideas about the mountain set and stage direction, through to the final aria (Jack, I swear),  follow this link.

Rosewood's original post (and the link) was in Story or Film, Which is Better, but the discussion has been moved.  If you want to join in, go to the Music Thread.

Music Question of the Day

Mikey7 asked this question:

"In the theatrical trailer for BBM I know they used the beautiful end theme from Shawshank Redemption, and also some of The Wings.  But does anyone out there possibly know what music is used at the very beginning of the trailer - about the first ten seconds or so?  I'd really love to know which film it comes from."

Can anyone supply the answer?  Write to ellen@davecullen.com

Music Trivia of the Day

Dal posted a question in the Music Thread:  "What Carl Perkins song does Jack sing, (in the Annie Proulx story) bawling 'what I say-ay-ay?'  We came up with a coupla 'what I say-ay-ay' songs from that period, but none that were written or recorded by Carl.  'Course, he could have recorded one of them which we never found out about;  or the whole thing may have been fabricated by AP.  Like 'Water-Walking Jesus...'"

FIXorSTAND replied:  "I have now listened through ALL of C.P. recordings pre '63.  Close to 150 tracks.  I may very well have missed the 'What I say-ay-ay,' but I don't think so...When The Right Time Comes Along...would fit the situation best symbolically (I Know Someone Will Love Me When The Right Time Comes Along).  Recorded in 1962 - would make sense too, that Jack plays a fairly recent song (or a classic).  BUT NO (what I say-ay-ay)- and now I need to listen to something COMPLETELY different."

Gay Rodeo Gains in Popularity, Don't Miss Out

by michaelflanagansf

Those of you who have met me in my travels around to various board events may think that I don't know one end of a plastic sheep from another, but I can tell you this - I have become a big fan of the gay rodeo this year.  And I'm not alone - when I was at Auntie's BBQ one of the other people there told me that attendance at the rodeos are up 20% this year (gee...I wonder why...NOT).  If you would like to get in on the fun it's not too late in the season.  The San Francisco Bay Area Rodeo is Sept. 14-17th  and there are upcoming events in the Washington D.C. area Sept 8-10  and Las Vegas Oct. 5-8 .

Dying to find out exactly what Lureen is doing in those barrel races?  Want to see a real gay bull rider?  Well here's your chance.  And if you want to plan for next year follow these links to the   International Gay Rodeo Association website and GayRodeo.com for a calendar of events all over the country.

I must admit to not being much of a sports fan...but for some reason these events just seem to keep my attention.  Give one of these events a chance - you won't find a nicer set of people anywhere (other than a gathering of people from this board, that is).

Burning Question

If you know of anyone who is going to Burning Man to do a project with a Brokeback Mountain theme please contact me - I'd love to do a future column on this.

How to Use Our Forum E-mail Notification

by twistedboy

Listen up!  Listen up!  Recently I discovered a very helpful feature of the forum software.  Some of you may know of it.  For those unaware I offer the following.  Each thread has a function that sends an email notification to your email address every time something is posted to that thread.  In order to enable this feature, you must go to the thread.  For example, BBM General Discussion.  There are 5 buttons in the bar that includes the page numbers of that thread.  The 4th button from right is Notify.  Click this button then click OK to enable the function.  Now whenever something is posted to that thread an email will arrive at your outside email address.  Some people prefer this function over just surfing from board to board looking for subjects of interest.  You can disable this function by following the exact same procedure outlined above.

One problem with this feature is keeping track of what threads you are subscribed to.  We have recently found a feature that helps with this.

Click on your profile.  Click on Notifications and Email in the Modify Profile section to the left.  You may have to scroll down a bit but a list of all threads subscribed to is in the center of the page under Current Topic Notifications.

You can also navigate the forum from this screen.  Just click any thread you are subscribed to and it will take you directly to the thread.  You can also unsubscribe from this list by checking the box and clicking the Unsubscribe button.

I would also encourage you to explore your profile periodically.  As you become more proficient with the board you may want to adjust your original settings established at registration to better fit your use of the board now.]

New Role for Michelle Williams

BeGay.com reports:  Capote's  Philip Seymour Hoffman and Brokeback Mountain's Michelle Williams will join forces for Synecdoche.

The film will mark the directorial debut of award-winning oddball screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, whose wonderfully unhinged scripts include the likes of Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  The new film, which starts shooting next summer, will tell the story of an anguished playwright and the various women in his life.

Political Watch:  Gay Woman Wins Alabama Election

According to Americablog, Patricia Todd was reinstated Saturday as the Democratic Party's nominee for a seat in the Alabama Legislature.  With no Republican candidate on the November ballot, Todd is about to become the state's first out legislator.

The Alabama Democratic Party Executive Committee voted 95-87 to reject the ruling of a subcommittee two days ago that had voted to disqualify Todd, whose campaign was supported by the Victory Fund, a Washington DC-based organization that helps the campaigns of LGBT candidates.

Aguirre: …pup tent on the q.t…. sleep with the sheep…hunderd percent.  Now after yer FNIT and SNIT, I’ll let that slide to about 72%.  After a few more days when rose stemmin’ activities hit full-throttle, sheep’ll be damned anyway, you can let it drop to about 47%.  And when the sheep get mixed, the least you can do is get the count right for me.  Yeah, yeah, I know ya’ ain’t queer…nor you, Mr. Me Neither.  Tomorrow mornin’, we’ll truck ya’ up to the jump-off… [thinking] Goddammit, like this every summer.  Same shit.  Different deuces.

Is It Time to Support WalMart?

Chronicle Herald.ca reports:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the retail giant that grew up in the rural South, is moving to attract gay shoppers as it expands its presence in urban centers.

By entering into a partnership with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce this week, the company "is making a very sincere effort to reach out to people who are a significant part of our customer base," Wal-Mart spokesman Bob McAdam said Wednesday.

"I am proud of that effort," he said.

But Wal-Mart did not issue a news release about the alliance, leaving the chamber to announce it.

And as news of the partnership trickles out, a backlash is taking shape among some conservatives.

"I don’t think this is something that will sell on Main Street America, where most Wal-Mart stores are located," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a conservative public policy group in Washington.

"I don’t think cheap prices on goods from China will be enough to stop a rollback in their customer base if they choose to go down this aisle."

By partnering with a gay business group, Wal-Mart is "validating the idea that homosexual activists have the right to shake down corporations out of fear of being called bigots," said Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute at Concerned Women for America, a Washington-based public policy group.

by Jim Bond    www.findingbrokeback.com

The cluster of small towns generally east and northeast of Calgary is rich in Brokeback filming locations and can easily be toured as a group.

Beiseker is the site of Ennis' Trailer, the Motel, and, east of town, the amazing Twist Ranch.  Nearby Carseland has the Drop Off site and the Signal Bar.  If you are really in this stuff deep, God help you, it is also the site of the Sneering Mechanics scene, which was shot, but subsequently cut from the film.

A bit out of the way to the east, Dorothy is quite interesting in its own right, a ghost town with lots of worn, rustic, and somewhat romantic buildings.  This geologically unique area is known as Alberta's Badlands.  Not everyone will opt to visit Dorothy; the only Brokeback action here is Ennis' Flashback.

Decaying Rockyford is a trove of great Brokeback sites:  the Childress Dance Hall Façade, the Riverton Post Office, JT's Bar and the Phone Booth, as well as the Electra and Childress Rodeo Grounds.  All of these are within spittin' distance of one another.

Tiny Dinton won't take you long.  The Church and Drive-In field are opposite one another.  A few minutes away, street brawl memories come to life in front of Blackie's "Thanksgiving" Bar.

In the following weeks we will present other simple itineraries and points of interest.  If you can't wait that long, or if you would like to do some armchair traveling to Brokeback country right now, please visit us at www.FindingBrokeback.com.

Poem of the Day

by CANSTANDIT

Pausing for thought. . . . . .

My Rain

I see you thru my rain;
Your fire and your embers, your smolder and your ashes;
I see you, now, as snow looks cold upon my heart;
As wind carries leaves of hope, far off, then gone.

I see you thru my rain;
Your seasons and your time, your weather and your changes;
I know you, now, as gravel grinds joy into fragments;
As sun burns fields to straw, flattened.

I see you thru my rain;
Your voice and your lips, your eyes and your arms;
I love you, now, as red sleeve buries me in your soul;
As dreams fill space, and the stand becomes the fix.

Vote in the Book Club Poll

Our Forum Book Club is in the process of choosing our next book.  Please help us decide by participating in the poll.  Click here to vote on the next selection.

Thanks to michaelflanagansf for guiding us through three successful discussions already.  We are heading into the final stretch with Larry McMurtry's Last Picture Show.  If you are just finishing the book, please join us, questions on the final third will be posted Monday morning in the book club thread.

Close Range Discussion: The Bunchgrass Edge of the World

If you can't commit to a novel, why not a short story?  (or do both, like some of us)  We are finishing up our discussion of The Mud Below  from Annie Proulx's Close Range.  Comments on The Mud Below  are still welcome over the weekend.  Our next story will be The Bunchgrass Edge of the World.  If you have read this story please join us and help us pick a starting date and a set of discussion questions.

Music Question Answered

We have an answer to mikey7's question, published in Wednesday's Daily Sheet.  He asked:  "In the theatrical trailer for BBM I know they used the beautiful end theme from Shawshank Redemption, and also some of The Wings.  But does anyone out there possibly know what music is used at the very beginning of the trailer? - about the first ten seconds or so?"

garyd had the answer:  "It is So Was Red  and End Title  from The Shawshank Redemption  soundtrack by Thomas Newman.  Shawshank's music has been used in at least 13 different theatrical trailers including Seabiscuit, Forrest Gump, and the current All the Kings' Men."

BBM Reunion Kiss Scores High Against Classics

Laurie Hanna of Mirror.co.uk reports that in a recent survey of 3000 movie fans, "the same-sex kiss between Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in the controversial cowboy movie made the top five ahead of a host of classic clinches."

Only four "Memorable Screen Kisses" ranked ahead of our favorite:

1.  Burt Lancaster/Deborah Kerr;  From Here to Eternity  (1953)
2.  Tobey Macquire/Kirsten Dunst;  Spiderman  (2002)
3.  George Peppard/Audrey Hepburn;  Breakfast at Tiffany's  (1961)
4.  Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore;  Ghost  (1990)

Of interest:  This poll was conducted by leading cosmetic dentists Glee of London's Harley Street.  After the behavior of the Academy members this year, I suppose the dentists are as good a group as any to survey.  If WE conduct our own survey of 3000 forum members, which kiss do you think will be number one?

Sig Lines in the Forum

Ever wonder the origin of Lola's sig-line?  getreal asked her:  "Do you know to whom your signature quote is attributed?   It is so profoundly touching!"

"I am nothing special; just a common man with common thoughts, and I've led a common life.  There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten.  But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who's ever lived: I've loved another with all my heart and soul."

Lola was ready with the answer.  "My signature line is from The Notebook, the book and the movie, as said by Mr. James Garner.  I just LOVED the book and the movie, I cried for days after seeing the film.  I love that line, so very true."

If you have a favorite sig-line in the forum, please nominate it at ellen@davecullen.com

Transgendered Teacher in Batavia City School District

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports:

The Batavia City School District today gave parents the opportunity to see what their high school students will be taught about transgender issues…The meeting with students is the next step for the district, which has already met with parents and trained staff to support a transgendered science teacher who will start the school year as a woman.  So far, no student has withdrawn from the district because of the issue… but four parents have written letters to the district requesting that their children be excluded from a classroom led by the teacher…The staff, many parents, the teachers' union and others have been supportive of the science teacher, the superintendent said.

Gender identity disorder is a medically diagnosed condition and protected as a disability under New York law.  Click here to view the presentation that will be shown to the students.

Member Profile: Twtplanner

Today's Member Profile is Twtplanner who charmed us all at the Texas BBQ. He shares his life:

I was born and raised in a small town on the high plains of northwest Oklahoma, the younger of two sons. Dad worked as a pumper in the oil and gas industry (a pumper is responsible for monitoring the wells, keeping them running and measuring production). The place was, and is, a landscape filled with big ranches and cattle herds, real cowboys and rodeos, oil field roughnecks, wind, tumbleweeds, and huge, endless blue horizons. Picture the opening scenes of our movie, in Signal (without the mountains, lol) and you're there.

Growing up, we dabbled in livestock, raised hogs and cattle for a while, had chickens and roosters (still have memories of one particular mean ole rooster that you had to watch out for because he'd come up behind you and try 'spur' you with those big claws on the back of his legs). I got a notion in junior high to take on the raising of sheep - so started that and 'showed' both sheep and pigs when county fair time came around.

College time and several of my best friends and I chose a church-related, small, private school in Oklahoma City. That came and went and for various reasons, I ended up living in Tulsa, working at the city/county planning agency. After several years there, I moved back to Oklahoma City with a job as an urban planner, focusing on economic development and land regulation issues, and that's where I am today.

My house is in an old, historic neighborhood and I hang out there a lot. Also spend time with friends, either cooking dinner (I know more about cooking than a can opener), or going out for eats. I enjoy landscaping and tending the yard, and working on the house. It's important to take care of your self, so I regularly go to the gym and try to keep a good exercise schedule. Now, after years of living in the city, I'm pleasantly surprised to sense a tug at how I lived when growing up and am thinking more and more about finding a place on a small acreage, with no next-door neighbors or homeowner associations! I might even find me a mean ole rooster to run around on the place.

Profile Questions:

01. Currently listening to? Like others here, since BBM I've rediscovered my roots for country music. (with my background..didn't stand a chance.) Also enjoy light jazz and lounge music (Costes), movie soundtracks (instrumentals-the more strings the better, and compilations such as Something's Gotta Give), Teddy Thompson (really like his self-titled album), some good rock, and my own cd's of light soul music from the 60's and 70's (The Drifters, Benton Brook, The Spinners, Barbara Lewis, Billy Paul).

02. Currently reading? I don't read too many academic or heavy intellectual things, preferring instead novels. Finishing up some light summer reading, basic John Grisham stuff. Have been reading Larry McMurtry's latest, Telegraph Days. Also reading a book given to me by a good friend I met through this forum, Felice Picano's The Lure.

03. Biggest challenge? Staying on point with the job of doing for others and not allowing myself to become distracted with self-perceived problems and imaginary woes.

04. Your perfect day? Rising early in the morning, throwing the stuff in the SUV, heading out with that special guy on a spur of the moment road trip. Drinking hot coffee in the cool morning, driving along and watching the sunrise, no set schedule, stopping at the rode side Stuckey's or curio place to look at rattlesnake farms and totem poles, and quiet comfortable moments, all while driving to the cabin.

05. What's your indulgence? Ultimate Fight Challenge on Spike TV Wink Oh...and cinnamon rolls.

06. What's you inspiration? Older people known as 'The Greatest Generation.'

07. Last major Purchase? New car in July.

08. First job? Sacker and carryout at United Grocery Store. I wasn't old enough to have my driver's license but still would drive our old 1950 Chevy pick-up into town, work my shift, and drive back home, hoping I wouldn't get stopped or pulled over.

09. What do you know for sure? The sun always rises.

10. Favorite Movie? Of course BBM. But I have lots of favorites: Giant, Paul Newman movies (Hud, Butch Cassidy ), most Hitchcock films (Rear Window and Rebecca my favorites), John Wayne movies (favorite is True Grit - would act it out as a kid), L.A. Confidential and The Usual Suspects, and like most everyone, To Kill a Mockingbird (which btw, didn't win Best Picture either).

11. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Oh I believe it's out there, and I don't know that I need God to say anything to me - you know, lot's of times it's what's not said.....I'd like to see a smile and get a big, strong, hug.

12. What brought you to the Forum? After my first viewing, I read comments on the Yahoo site until they began to sour. In February I was home resting up after a surgery and did a Google search. I read and lurked for several weeks before registering - I haven't ever participated in forums before, other than reading some sport fans boards. But after reading the impact stories, and tales of personal struggles with coming to terms with being gay, many of which I could have written myself, well it just hit me hard..made me realize I wasn't the only one who went through tough times. It's been a great service and has been a kind of solace and therapy for me. And..I got to go to a great BBQ!

13. Your favorite threads? Most of the time I'm camped out in a booth at Aunties Diner. But I continue to read and occasionally post in the Impact thread.

14. How many times have you watched BBM? Saw it in the movie theaters about 10 times and have watched it at home three or four.

15. Your favorite BBM scene? The whole movie is my favorite and I when I try to break it down into a single scene, I end up thinking of several of them. I reserve the right to change at will, but I guess these days my favorite scene is the night of the first fishing trip, after they went swimming. I love the peace Ennis is feeling, when he is looking into the stars, clearly content and happy, and Jack absolutely knowing he wants a life with Ennis.

Photo-sizing Etiquette
by LoveEmBoys

Hey everyone!  A quick heads up about how to manipulate picture files so that we don’t inadvertently bog down the forum.

Pictures take a much longer time to download than text does.  Unless you have a super fast internet connection, you’ll see this on any page where there is both pictures and text.  Since not all of us have super fast connections, it is good forum-etiquette to reduce your picture size as much as possible before posting.

Picture size is measured two ways -- in file size (bytes) as well as in resolution (the height and width of the picture in pixels).  Before you post a picture, please check the file size to ensure it isn’t unnecessarily large.  Pictures viewed over the web look good even at a much lower resolution than what you may want to print out on paper.

Remember also your avatar and signature banner, if you have one, are images that are displayed very frequently, and so it is very important that they are small in size.

Finally, it is possible to make a picture display smaller in a post by specifying width and / or height elements in the IMG tag -- such as   [img width=200 ]http://....[/img ]    However, this does not reduce the file size of the image!  So this method, while making the photo display nicely on the page does not make the photo load any faster.

Please keep these rules of thumb in mind when posting pictures
•   No pictures larger than 100 KB
•   Limit of one picture per post
•   Avatars should be 65x65 pixels and no more than 40 KB
•   Signatures -- no more than 40 KB

Photobucket:  if you host your pictures in a Photobucket account, you can resize your pictures right there.  Edit the picture you want to resize, and select how much to reduce the image by.

All graphics programs will have a tool for reducing the size of an image.  Generally they will ask you a percentage by which to resize the image, or you can enter specifically what resolution you want.  Each tool, however, calls it something slightly different:

Microsoft Office Picture Manager:  Under Edit Pictures is an option to Resize.
Paint:  Image | Stretch/Skew
Photoshop:  Image | Image Size
Picasa:  Picasa will not allow you to save your edits to the original file, so after editing you must do "Save Copy As" or "Export Picture to Folder"

For detailed instructions about how to resize an image, and how to check it's file size to begin with, see this document: Reducing Picture size.pdf

For this, and other helpful hints about using the forum -- check out the FAQ thread.

Member Profile:  Killersmom (Auntie)

Today we visit with an amazing hostess, Killersmom.  First she worked her way into our hearts as our virtual Auntie, and every day folks meet up in her Diner thread to say hello and share their morning coffee.  Because her Diner is global, it's always time for morning coffee somewhere in the world.

Killer

In August, Auntie hosted what was, for many, the biggest party we had ever seen.  Guests traveled from as far away as Finland, Italy and Australia to meet this special lady (and her famous little dog.)

Hi ya'll, this is Auntie killersmom, coming to you from my back yard in central Texas.  I am a 54 year old widow of 18 months after 31 years of marriage to Rick.  My two fabulous sons are Jonathan (26) a PhD candidate at UNM, and Joshua (23) an E4 in the United States Coast Guard, soon to reside in Alaska.  I am one of 5 siblings, and my parents are still alive at age 79 and 77.  My dad was career Air Force, but was lucky enough to spend most of my life here with an eight year stay on the Texas Gulf Coast. All  my dogs reside here with me, Killer (thus killersmom Grin), Tootsie, Rascal and Shanzie, and 4 cats complete the mix. (They are all "rescued" members of my family.)

I  became a member of this forum after lurking on the old Salon Blog Board that Dave started.  When it became this forum, I joined on 12/26/05.  Moderating began for me in January, 2006.  Like so many others here, I joined to get answers to my questions about why the movie affected me the way it did.  There have been so many answers to my questions, and I have had the profound luck to meet so many wonderful caring, sharing, and honest folks!

The first person to greet me on the forum, gnash.

This has been an astounding eight months for me.  It compares to no other thing in my life.  It has been a growing time for me.  Many here I have had the privilege to meet and get to know will be friends for life, of that I am sure.  I also know that what I give here is returned to me 100 fold! I know this as well.......

11.  If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?  Welcome here for a life well spent, your friends await.

Brokeback Mountain Calendar Available

by rickpouch

I just received the BBM calendar, available at www.calendars.com.

It is NOT high gloss. However it is great.

One or two of the photos I haven't seen before....and I thought that I had seen every photo since first coming to this site back in December!  Interesting that neither Alma nor Lureen are in any of the photos. Only Ennis and Jack.

March 2007 features the dozy embrace.  April is the famous photo of Jack (legs spread out on the truck). June is the scene of their final day together (right before we find out that Jack has died.)

It also includes September through December of this year with a side shot of Jack and Ennis on their horses--(that photo at that particular angle is not familiar to me).

Follow this link to see the back cover of the calendar (w/ all the inside photos----except the one that appears on the combined Sept. through December 2006 page).

It's well worth the $12.99 to have this calendar on the wall for more than a year.  Great calendar!

For Martin... I only knew you in this time and place, but in this realm you touched my heart.

Just sending up a prayer of thanks...
for the time you shared with us
for your humor and your grace
for the sunshine in your words
for your insights and your honesty
